The Niña & Pinta are in Beaufort

Tour these replicas of Columbus' Ships through Tuesday

By Tauri Duer, Publisher, Macaroni Kid Beaufort-Hilton Head April 21, 2017

We had a chance to explore the Niña & Pinta today! How cool is that! Not only was it fun to walk around the replica ships on this beautiful day, but it was also very educational for both the kids and adults.

For instance, did you know that the explorers during Columbus’ day would all have slept out on the decks of the ships? Or did you know that it was a great job to be a cabin boy…eventually? Or that the crew of the ship was kept illiterate and uneducated on purpose? The reasons for these answers were surprising and made me think about the glamorous and not so glamorous sides to being an explorer. We learned a ton of information and it wasn’t all from walking around and reading signs. The crew of these boats were fabulous and made history come alive. These volunteer historians told us about the boats, answered our questions, and told us things I would never have even thought to ask. We had a great time, and I feel like my kids will now have a better context of what it was like to be an explorer in Columbus’ day and what would have driven someone to take on that type of lifestyle.
